This simple homemade ginger shot is an easy way to keep your immune system healthy during winter or anytime you need an anti-inflammatory boost. I love drinking this wellness copycat shot first thing in the morning followed later with a no bake energy bite to energize my day.

It’s refreshing, nutrient packed and much like making your own multigrain bread at home it’s more affordable than purchasing store-bought. All you need for this wellness drink is fresh ginger and lemon, coconut water and a pinch of cayenne pepper; it’s small but intense!

Why I Love This Ginger Shots Recipe

  • Immune booster shot: Ginger is well known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be used as an immune system boost as well as a digestion aid.
  • Easy and affordable to make: Although there are many store branded versions of ginger shots, making a ginger shot homemade uses only 4 simple affordable ingredients.

Ingredients Needed

Ingredients for ginger shot in separate bowls.
  • Ginger: Fresh ginger root is preferred, I don’t recommend using ground ginger or you won’t get the full health benefits of ginger.
  • Lemon: For a ginger lemon shot recipe, you will need about 2-3 lemons.
  • Coconut water: I prefer the sweeter taste of coconut water instead of filtered water, but use what you like in the fresh ginger shots.
  • Cayenne pepper: Just a pinch helps detoxify the body.

How to Make Ginger Shots

  • Prep. Prep ingredients by washing and chopping the fresh ginger root and freshly squeezing the lemon juice.
  • Blend. Add chopped ginger root, freshly squeezed lemon juice, coconut water and cayenne pepper to a high speed blender and blend until smooth (you can also use a fancy juicer).

  • Strain. Place a fine mesh strainer over a bowl or measuring cup and pour the liquid over the sieve. Press the pulp with a spoon or small glass to squeeze all the ginger juice liquid out of it.

  • Drink. This recipe makes about 4 ginger shots which is about 15ml per shot. Consuming more than one shot on a daily basis could result in heartburn.

Flavor Variations for a ginger shot

This basic ginger shot recipe can be tailored to your preferences by adding additional nourishing ingredients.

  • Honey: Adding raw honey can help balance the spicy heat of the ginger shot.
  • Turmeric and black pepper: Ginger and fresh turmeric are often paired together in a ginger turmeric shot to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Carrot ginger: Add one medium carrot that has been washed and dried (no need to peel). The natural sweetness adds a balancing flavor to the intensity of the ginger.
Spinach with green apple: Add one cup of spinach leaves and one cored and chopped green apple.
  • Add-ins: Additional flavor mix-ins could include pineapple juice, freshly squeezed orange juice, lime juice, a pinch of salt or even apple cider vinegar.

Recipe Tips to make a homemade ginger shot

  • Clean produce. Remember to wash and dry the ginger root as well as the outer skin of the lemon.
  • Stir or shake before drinking. If you are making these ginger shots ahead of time, you will want to shake them up before taking one.
  • Remember to strain it. This is to remove the pulp for a more desirable smooth shot. If you don’t have a sieve, use a nut milk bag or cheesecloth.
  • Lessen the intense flavor: Taking this in one shot is not for the faint of heart (you’ve been warned!). If you would rather sip it, you can mix it with juice, sparkling water or even include it in a green smoothie.

Storing Homemade Ginger Shots

  • Store: Store leftover ginger shots in small shot bottles or in a large sealed glass jar in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Always stir or shake before drinking.
  • Freeze: You can also freeze the wellness shots to have on hand all fall and winter! I like to freeze them in ice cube trays and thaw two at a time for a wellness shot.
