I decided to create some spooky/cute Rice Krispies Squares together with my little cousin. She came oven and wanted to work on a DIY project, so we thought, why not make Halloween inspired crispy treats that everyone can enjoy?

And that, my friends, is how the ghost, Frankenstein and spider squares came to life. Some crazy sugar eyes and some white and dark chocolate can really make for a fun afternoon with kids!

Ingredients

Melt white and dark chocolate in two separate bowls and let them cool a bit before using.

When the chocolate has thickened, decorate your rice krispie squares as you like. Refrigerate them for about 30 minutes before serving them so that the chocolate sets.

How to Prevent Rice Krispies Squares from Becoming Hard

If you want to get those perfect, soft and sweet best rice Krispie treats, there are a few tips you can follow.

  • Make sure you’re using fresh marshmallows. Stale ones will be harder to melt.
  • Keep the temperature to medium-low heat, high heat will definitely give you rock solid squares.
  • When transferring the melted marshmallow mixture into the prepared baking dish, don’t press on the mix, instead pat gently. Pressing too hard will make the mix compact and after some time resting in the pan it will become very hard.
  • Eat them in a timely manner. After a couple of days at room temperature the squares will begin to go from soft and gooey to hard and stale.

How to Decorate Halloween Rice Krispies Squares

To make Frankenstein: Take a Rice Krispies Square, add two medium-sized sugar eyes and with a spatula or spoon, spread some dark chocolate on the top of the square to give Frankenstein its hair.

To make the Spider: Take a Rice Krispies Square, dip it in melted dark chocolate and add 6 small-sized sugar eyes to the middle of the square.

To make the Ghost: Take a Rice Krispies Square, dip or drizzle white chocolate all over the square and add two medium-sized eyes to it.

How to Store Rice Krispies Squares

These Homemade Rice Krispie treats can be stored in an air-tight container at room temperature for about three days. They can also be stored in an air-tight container and frozen for up to one month.

I suggest to store them without decorating them and when you’re ready to serve them then decorate them with the melted chocolate.

If you are stacking the squares then place a piece of parchment paper or wax paper between the squares so that they don’t stick to each other.
