While a mix of boxed brownies is handy, there is no comparison in taste to this easy fudge brownie recipe made with real melted chocolate. The rich fudgy taste of a homemade brownie is the ultimate dessert!

Store bought brownie mixes rely on cocoa powder which doesn’t have the same dark chocolate flavor that can only come from the combination of real chocolate, butter and sugar, just like in my fudgy brownie cookies

This easy recipe is so chocolatey, soft and gooey, it’s really the best brownies recipe you’ll only ever need!

Why These are the Best Homemade Fudgy Brownies

  • Thick and fudgy: These ultra chocolatey brownies are denser than my chocolate fudge cake but lighter than this walnut fudge, for the perfect rich, gooey, chewy brownie.
  • Better than box mix brownies: You only need 8 ingredients to make this no-fuss from scratch recipe! It really couldn’t be easier to make the best fudgy brownie recipe.

Fudgy Brownie Recipe Ingredients

Ingredients to make brownies in separate bowls.
  • Butter: Unsalted butter softened to room temperature.
  • Chocolate: I love good quality unsweetened chocolate bar or semi-sweet chocolate chips. Milk chocolate is too sweet, but if you like sweeter, it could be used.
  • Granulated sugar: This adds sweetness. Whisking it with the eggs and butter helps get the thin crackly tops!
  • Vanilla extract: High quality real vanilla extract provides a rich taste.
  • Eggs: Three large eggs help bind the ingredients together.
  • All-purpose flour: Adds structure to these easy homemade brownies.
  • Salt: Just a pinch of salt to enhance the flavors.
  • Walnuts: I love to add walnuts for crunch, but you can omit them or substitute chocolate chunks.

Fudgy Chocolate Brownies Tips and Variations

  • Chocolate chips or chunks: Add in ¼-½ cup chocolate chips for double the chocolate flavor like I do in my double chocolate bread.
  • Coffee: Coffee can add a more pronounced flavor to chocolate. Add 1 teaspoon of espresso powder or instant coffee to the flour when adding the flour.
  • Dairy-free: Make these brownies dairy-free by using a dairy-free butter and chocolate chips or dark chocolate.
  • Avoid cakey brownies: These are fudgy brownies! To avoid them becoming cake-like do not add too much flour to the batter and don’t overmix the brownie batter.
  • Line with parchment paper: This helps the brownies not stick and also holds in the moisture to keep them rich and fudgy!
  • Best baking pan: For super thick brownies, use an 8-inch pan. I love to use a 9×9 inch baking pan that is metal. Glass or ceramic will require a few extra minutes of baking time. If you would like to double the recipe, use a 9×13 baking dish.

What is the best way to get a crackly top on homemade fudgy brownies?

Whisking your eggs is the best way to get a crinkly top on a homemade brownie recipe! This is why I recommend whisking them one at a time and beating at least 15 seconds between additions.

How to slice fudgy brownies?

If you would like to perfectly slice brownies, you will need to wait to cool your brownies completely. Once cooled, use a sharp knife that is not serrated to cut this easy brownie recipe. Run it under hot water for a few minutes, dry with a towel and repeat for every slice.

Notes

How to tell when brownies from scratch are done baking?

For the fudgiest brownies it can be hard to do the toothpick test because you want your brownies to be dense and fudgy and moist crumbs on a toothpick may not be the best indicator they are done!
The best way is to check and see if your brownies have a thin crackle on top of the brownie. If they do, slightly press your finger in the middle and if you feel some resistance they are done! I would start checking once you start to smell a chocolate aroma coming from the oven. Remember, your brownies will continue baking once you remove them from the oven.

How to store brownies?

Store chewy brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Uncut brownies stay fresher than cut brownies.
You can also freeze brownies. I like to wrap slices in plastic wrap then foil and freeze in a freezer safe bag for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature and warm up if you like before serving!
