Basic Cream Cheese Frosting

This cream cheese frosting is anything but basic! Made with only 6 ingredients, it's a sweet & tangy, luscious finishing touch for cakes, cupcakes & more!

Ingredients
 
 

  • ½ cup butter (softened)
  • 5 ounces cream cheese (room temperature)
  • 5 cups icing/powdered sugar
  • 1 pinch salt*
  • ¼ cup cream (whole/heavy or whipping)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

*If using unsalted butter then add ¼ teaspoon of salt.

    Instructions
     

    • In a large bowl beat on medium high until creamy the butter and cream cheese 1-2 minutes, lower the speed and add the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating well between each addition, then add the salt, cream and vanilla beat until fluffy approximately 2-3 minutes. Enjoy!

    Notes

    Different variations can be made with this recipe. Add zest of an orange or lemon, substitute 1 tablespoon of cream with juice. For chocolate remove 1/2 cup of the powdered/icing sugar and replace with 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa be sure to sift the cocoa to remove any lumps.
    Keep the unused frosting in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days or stored in the freezer in a freezer safe container for up to 1 month.
